Review: We Tried a Five-Day Juice & Soup Cleanse and Here’s What Happened

You know that ‘meh’ feeling. The post-Christmas; post-New Year; post-sniffles and, for me, post gluttonous -holiday feeling that makes you want to press the reset button.

Last Monday, this feeling drove me into the arms of the shiny happy people at Urban Health in Ranelagh and back out the door with a Five-Day Juice and Soup Cleanse, 3 fresh juices and 2 soups per day for either a 3 day or 5 day cleanse.

Cleanses have graduated from juice-only cleanses to include more fibre-rich soups due to the nutritional and weight loss benefits. In fact, according to Pinterest, “souping” is one of the top 10 food trends for 2018.

Urban Healthy Juice Cleanse

While my January scales would insist it should have been a weight loss initiative, the sole aim of this purist undertaking was to flood my body with badly needed nutrients after drowning it in wine; cheese and wine-in-cheese (fondue) for seven straight days.

Urban Health will tell you sternly, but kindly, to try to live off the juices and soups only, but if you are at risk of murdering and consuming your partner, eat food.

I chose to put my husband’s safety first and keep the solids on the plate – and here’s what happened.

Before we begin, remember cleansing is not for everyone. Check with your health care provider first especially people who are pregnant; under-weight; diabetic; have unstable heart disease or low blood pressure.

It felt really bad, and then really good not to carb load

Not being a massive fan of juices or, erm, soup for that matter, it was always going to be an uphill battle to survive the five days. And we all know what happens when we ungraciously dump our love interest, in this case carbs, we want them back really badly.

I found myself tempting to lick the window of my favourite café on day one. After grappling with the stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression) you eventually settle on acceptance that you and your carbs are going to be distant lovers for a little while.

You get seriously odd looks from people around you

The normal ‘feed me’ singsong of your stomach nearing lunchtime will be replaced by a startlingly unhuman roar – one that stopped my colleague typing in her tracks. “I really think you should eat something,” she insisted, eyeing me suspiciously as I took out my completely out-of-character green soup.

You will also sound like a hot water bottle on legs and if you attempt to run on a treadmill. Best to choose a machine beside the gym speakers to drown out the sound.

Insider tip: follow the instructions on how to properly store your juices or you will be punished by Mother Nature. Sitting in my car at Dundrum Shopping Centre I opted to open the beetroot juice (but of course the beetroot one) which exploded all over the inside of my car. A passing man looked genuinely afraid I had just bludgeoned my son.

You need to have a really boring social life

If you are planning this cleanse, lock yourself indoors. It is genuinely hard to saunter through a normal day avoiding the pitfalls.

Being brutally honest I was not as good as I should have been – opting to listen to the ‘ah sure’ voice in my head that reassuring me the nutrients were getting in along with the coffee (cough wine).

Your skin looks better

Only three days in and your skin will definitely look brighter. It might only be a smug glow but it will look brighter nonetheless.

You will lose some weight

I dropped 2lbs – probably something to do with the criminal level of cheese I was eating in advance of the cleanse or simply water weight.

Your wallet will lose some weight

You could in theory with a lot of effort do a Juice + Soup cleanse yourself at home but the convenience of having the items carried to the boot of your car by a handsome and chirpy bearded man offset the pain of the investment.
