Women We Love: Miriam Kerins Hussey, Health & Wellness Entrepreneur And Pharmacist

A qualified pharmacist, Miriam Kerins Hussey spent 10 years working in the health care system, but her experience left her disillusioned with our accepted definition of ‘health care’.

“I felt that I was actually working in a sick care system not a health care system, a model that treats physical symptoms and not the root cause,” she says.

Rather than accept the status quo Miriam was motivated to explore other areas of health and wellness, and she went onto to train as an Integrated Wellness and Nutritional coach as well as a Yoga instructor, and Holistic Healing Practitioner.

Using her multitude of qualifications and expertise in both pharmaceutical and complimentary health therapies she promotes a unique collective and integrated approach.

Miriam shares her learnings through wellness and yoga retreats, seminars and programmes, and as a key-note speaker art conferences worldwide.

We spoke to the Business All Star Award Winner 2018 about The Awakening, which she co-founded with her husband, Performance Psychologist Gerry Hussey, her top mediation tips, and what’s it really like working with your other half…

How did you get involved in the health and wellness space?

I was always interested in health and wellbeing, it was this passion that lead me to study Pharmacy.

I then spent 10 years working as a pharmacist, where I felt that I was actually working in a sick care system not a health care system, a model that treats physical symptoms and not the root cause.

This in turn lead to me expand my learnings and knowledge looking at a more integrated and holistic approach to medicine.

For me, life is about being as authentic and real as I can. Which means that some days I don’t have the perfect balance, and others days I do.

I have come to realise through my extensive learnings and experience that real health needs to involve a collective and integrated approach, looking at the mind, body and soul.

True wellbeing is deeply connected to our lifestyles – the way we eat, drink, think, breathe, believe and perceive.

Movement and stress also play a huge role in how much dis-ease or ease we experience in our lives.

How does your expertise in both complimentary and pharmaceutical health therapies benefit you?

I believe the synergy of my background in pharmacy mixed with my holistic trainings bring great depth and scope to what I do.

I understand the Science behind medication, as well as the science behind meditation.

For me, having the insight into both worlds enables me to bridge them together, allowing for a far more integrated healing approach, one that involves the whole person – mind, body and spirit.

Miriam Kerins Hussey

Your career is multi faceted. What does a typical day look like for you?

Yes, there are many spokes to the wheel of what I do. But my underlying message and ethos never changes.

This is, that I fundamentally believe in an integrated approach to true health and performance so whether I am giving a talk, running a retreat, engaging in corporate wellness programmes or guiding a yoga/meditation session – it will always look to the heart and soul of developing human beings in a holistic and spiritual way.

Everyday is different but I make sure to try to start every day with yoga and meditation. Even if that is only for 5 or 10 minutes.

I follow this by a nice hot shower and a warming healing elixir like hot water and lemon or a ginger tea. I am a big fan of green smoothies also in the spring and summer months.

Real health needs to involve a collective and integrated approach, looking at the mind, body and soul.

Having a morning routine for me is vital in order to start your day with the best possible foot forward.

If I am feeling anxious or overwhelmed I will try to make time to get some fresh air, do some deep breathing or say a prayer.

How did ‘The Awakening’ come about?

It came about as a result of my husband and I bringing our passions for human health and performance together.

We both share a similar ethos and belief about mind body spirit connection and we are truly passionate about awakening a deeper sense of connection, consciousness and wellbeing within our society.

By merging together, The Awakening came to life and as result enables a truly enhanced package, bringing all of Gerry’s experience and expertise from the world of performance and sports psychology, theology and philosophy, and my lessons and learnings from pharmacy, nutrition and mindfulness.

The Awakening aims to ignite true potential and inspire the very best of your true self.

What makes it different from other wellness or yoga retreats?

I think we are different because we look beyond the physical. In today’s world, yoga and wellness can be perceived as superficial and one-dimensional, where by a lot of wellness trends or fads are solely focusing on just the physical – what we eat and how we move – And that’s it!

Love, laughter and Light. LOVE – Give the love you would want to receive. LAUGH – laugh a lot, laugh with one another and have the ability to laugh at yourself! LIGHT – be the light in each other's darkness. Never dim your special unique light. For you never know just how important your light is to those around you. Let your brightest light shine when you can. And on days when it is a little dimmer – let the other be the light for you. Life is about learning the ability to give and receive. To empower and recover. While of course food and fitness is extremely important, our belief at The Awakening is that true wellness goes far beyond calories, fats and carbs.

It goes deep in the heart and soul of our minds, our emotions, our spirits and our beliefs.

What other retreats and events have you organised?

The next upcoming big event I am organising is called ‘Soul Space, The Experience,’ which is a really exciting and bespoke event taking place in Claregalway Castle on Sept 22nd this year.

This will be a powerful one day event of inspiring workshops, talks, and experiential seminars held by leading Minds in mental, physical, spiritual and emotional human health and performance. We have an incredible line up of speakers.

I also run monthly Breathe and Be events in Dublin, along with regular Yoga and wellness retreats around Ireland.

You have spoken at countless events, can you share some of your favourites?

I really enjoyed being involved with Wellfest, Balance Expo and Outdoor Revolution this year.

I also love working alongside Kathryn Thomas at PureResults bootcamp, Alison Canavan at the Full 360 and Escapada health retreats which brought me to Mallorca last year which was amazing!

One of my highlights from the corporate world was speaking at “The Make Better Health Summit” in Athens and Monte Carlo last year, along with World Rugby and Irish Country Magazine Exhale events.

What’s your number one tip for mastering public speaking?

It would be to just be yourself. Speak from your heart and be authentic. Let your words come from a heart centred space and people will automatically connect.

If you are speaking from your head instead of your heart your true message will be diluted. Be real. Be you.

Take some deep breaths before getting on stage and try inhaling a calming essential oil to help with any nerves you may be experiencing.

What’s been your proudest career moment to date?

It has to be winning a Business All-Star Award for Thought Leader in Human Health and Performance at the 2018 All-Ireland Business Summit in Croke Park.

What’s the biggest risk you have ever taken?

Leaving Pharmacy and starting a new business has definitely been the biggest risk.

True wellness goes far beyond calories, fats and carbs. It goes deep in the heart and soul of our minds, our emotions, our spirits and our beliefs.

How did you meet Gerry?

We actually met on a retreat!

How has working in the same space as your husband influenced your career?

It has been invaluable, as I have learned so much from Gerry.

He has an incredible sense of calmness and composure and when things get challenging or I find myself struggling – he has been my rock of guidance and support.

Nutrition goes far beyond what we put on our plate. It goes far beyond just the physical. In order to be fully whole and fully well, we really need an integrated approach to our health and wellness. A holistic integration of the mind with the body and the body with the soul. A synergy of mind body and spirit. It is my belief that nourishment goes far beyond calories, fats and carbs ~ Miriam x💕💕 #integratedwellness #mirkerinsintegratedwellness #integratedhealth #holistichealth #holistichealthandhealing #holisticnutrition #mindbodyspirit #mindbodysoul #healthandwellness #healthcoach #healthandwellnesscoach #healthylifestyle #healthyjourney #primaryfoods #iin #integratednutritionhealthcoach #integratednutrition #dreambig #monaco #montecarlo #publicspeaker #guestspeaker #lovelife #lovewhatyoudo #womenInprogress #spiritjunkie

It’s also fantastic as we are deeply passionate about and interested in the same things in life.

People would assume you have the perfect work/life balance. Is this the case?

I don’t think anyone has the perfect life, or the perfect anything for that matter! I believe we are all learning and growing and adapting and doing the best that we can given the knowledge and experience that we have.

For me, life is about being as authentic and real as I can. Which means that some days I don’t have the perfect balance, and others days I do.

I really try my best to prioritise taking time out to pause, reflect and refresh.

Life is busy, so I find that I have to mindfully practice self-care, consciously engage in deep breathing, and regularly rest and relax so that I maintain my energy levels and so that I can do the work that I do.

Sleep is very important for me, along with meditation, movement, water and wholesome food in order to keep me balanced.

What are your top meditation tips?

Start by listening to a guided meditation. Bring your awareness to your breath and practice with 10 minutes every day in the morning.

I believe the synergy of my background in pharmacy mixed with my holistic trainings bring great depth and scope to what I do.

Think of your mind as being like the sky with thoughts as the clouds. Some days the sky will be turbulent and full of clouds, but that’s okay.

Meditation is not about stopping your thoughts, it’s about becoming aware of them and not hiding or judging them.

As you continue your practice and strengthen your awareness, the clouds become less and less and the noise in your mind gets quieter, and everything can become clearer and clearer.

The more you practice the closer you get to a centered, blissful state.

How can people make meditation a regular practice?

Prioritise a few minutes everyday to practice. Create a space in your home that is your own little haven!

One of the main pillars of health – Laughter. To be well, to be truly healthy, to be wholeheartedly happy – we must laugh. We must priorities fun. We must spend time with people who inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves. We, as human beings, need to play, to get outdoors and laugh. To experience freedom and laughter and release the fear of being judged. In order to be well, to be healthy, to be free, to experience life fully – LAUGH, LIVE and LOVE. ~ Miriam 💕💕 (Just my thoughts!) . . . . #laughter #laughteristhebestmedicine #love #healthandwellness #pillarsofhealth #harmony #innerwellbeing #innerpeace #fun #play #healthylifestyle #integratednutrition #integratedwellness #holistichealth #holistichealthcare #holistichealthcoach #holistichealthpractitioner #integratedhealthcoach #igyogafamily #weddingdaybliss

Get a nice cushion or chair, light a candle, dim the lights, light some incense. Make it your own sanctuary.

For anyone new to meditation, I would recommend using a guided meditation. There’s some great apps like Calm and Headspace. Ten minutes in the morning or evening is a good place to start.
