Have you ever wondered why it costs more for women to get their hair cut than men regardless of the time it takes? Well one Dublin hair salon has clearly put a lot of thought into it and just turned the standard pricing format on its head, literally.
Maven Hair Studio, located on Eustace Street, Temple Bar, has introduced a ‘gender neutral’ hair pricing strategy for its cutting and blow dry services.
“Pricing will now be based on length of time it takes to execute a service rather than your gender,” owner Michelle Grimes explained on Instagram.
“This is something I have wanted to do for a long time, so providing one generic pricing system helps to promote fairness and equality in the studio.”
“I see this as a very positive move and I hope you all agree,” Michelle added.
Maven Hair is the first hair salon in the Republic of Ireland to offer gender neutral hair cutting services. There is also one salon in Derry that is leading the way in this regard.

Michelle went into more detail on her Instagram stories as to the reasoning behind her decision to introduce the new pricing strategy.
“Gender neutral pricing is important because equality is important,” she stated.
“It can’t be justified in this day and age that the price point for a man or woman should be different.”
Prices for hair cuts at Maven Hair are now a standard €42.50, regardless of gender.
A ‘short’ blow-dry is €20, ‘medium’ €27, ‘long or curly’ €35, and you can choose to add was for an additional €20.
Maven Hair defines itself as “an atelier for hair stylists”, or as Michelle describes the concept, “it’s like ‘hot-desking’ for hair stylists.”
