Holly White’s Kind Beauty: Why You Need to Try Facial Acupuncture – The Holistic Alternative to Botox

Holly White cruelty free makeup budgetA few weeks back, as part of National Acupuncture Awareness week in March, I was invited to try an acupuncture session with Eva Heffernan who is the secretary of the Acupuncture Council of Ireland.

It was a really amazing experience and she did a treatment focusing on my general health but during our session I asked her about cosmetic or facial acupuncture.

A favourite amongst celebs I was very keen to try to see if it lived up to the hype.

Eva’s clinic is the Loghouse Clinic which is based in Waterford and as such I needed to find somewhere closer to home to try it out.

After a bit of research I found Emer McFarlane who practices in Greystones and Dublin City Centre and booked in for a session with her in the Dublin Holistic Centre.

The Treatment

After a lengthy consultation and chat with Emer she cleansed my skin using rose-water and began applying the needles.

They are as fine as a hair and honestly I didn’t find them painful at all. There was a tiny sharp pinch with some but it very quickly went away.

It has also shown results in reducing frown lines, improving hormonal balance and hormonal acne as well as treating Bell’s Palsy

She focused on body parts during the session as well as on my face which means it’s an overall treatment rather than just the cosmetic element.

Studies have shown that it increases the elasticity of the skin, promotes excretion of carbon dioxide and nitrogen from the skin and increases oxygen.

Once the needles were inserted she left the room for me to relax and let them get to work and I dozed off. The treatment room is on South William Street which is always buzzing with activity but I felt so peaceful and calm and the time seemed to fly by.

After she removed the needles she applied arnica to ensure quick healing of any bruising, although I didn’t get any.

Emer is also a Natural ‘Face-Lift’ Massage Therapist – which is an Ayurvedic Face Treatment which she often integrates into the session after the needles are removed. It relieved facial tension I didn’t even know I had.

A little furrow I get between my eyebrows which makes me look a but cross had melted away.

She also used a jade roller at the end of the session – which was so cooling and lovely – I now get the hype around them.

The Results

Overall I felt as if my facial muscles had all relaxed so much and my skin and eyes felt bright and lifted.

A little furrow I get between my eyebrows which makes me look a but cross had melted away. Energetically I felt revitalized and sharper than I have in a while.

Lastly she placed a tiny acupuncture bead on a de-stress point in my ear and put a plaster over it. I was to apply pressure on it over the next few days to continue the results.

The Details

A course of 10 is recommended and knowing the overall benefits of acupuncture from an energy point of view it seems like a total win-win situation that I would definitely recommend.

Initial sessions cost €90 for 90 minutes. Follow up sessions cost €65- €75. You can find out more information at www.emermcfarlane.ie.
