While earlier versions may have already leaked on the internet, the first trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel to 2008’s Mamma Mia dropped on Thursday.
It’s been almost ten years (yes, TEN) since the movie adaption of the musical Mamma Mia was brought to life on the big screen and ahead of the new movie’s release, in July 20, 2018, the trailer gives away so far under wraps details.
To start, having watched the two minutes and 24 seconds of the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again trailer we were shocked to see a major character missing, and feared dead.
At the beginning of the trailer flashback images of Meryl Streep run across the screen, and we hear Julie Walters telling Amanda Seyfried: “Your mother was the bravest person we ever met.”
Could it be true? Could Mamma Mia 2 be coming back without Donna Sheridan? A Mamma Mia without Meryl Streep is not a thought we like to dwell over.
The trailer also shows The Railway Man’s Jeremy Irvine in his role as a young Pierce Brosnan, sweeping Donna off her feet and onto his motorbike.
While fans knew Cher would be be a part of the new film her role was unconfirmed. The trailer reveals that she’s playing Meryl Streep’s mum, as Amanda refers to her as “Grandma”.
“Grandma, you weren’t invited,” smiles Amanda, to which Cher replies “That’s the best kind of party little girl.”
We already knew that the remake will feature a number of Abba tracks that were not included in the original, with ABBA’s Benny confirming some of the new songs we can expect to hear in the film, including ‘Angel Eyes’, ‘I Wonder’ and ‘When I Kissed the Teacher.’
The trailer has added to this list as it features I Have A Dream, Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is due for release in Irish cinemas on July 20, 2018.
